The process
Imposed without any input from the industry
This shutdown was written with no input from the workers, contractors and suppliers who carry its cost. It never went through a hearing, a comment period or a vote. Caltrans put it straight into its contract specifications.
A collaborative process would manage Games traffic without taking a summer away from the people who build these roads.
What this costs workers
- Health coverage and pensions at risk. Benefits are earned by the hour. No hours, no credits.
- Nowhere else to go. 41% of the contractors who bid this work bid nowhere else in the state.
- Local streets and roads. Cities and counties that operate routes next to these freeways are expected to mirror Caltrans.
